Rays Magic Number: 4

September 22, 2008 at 11:25 pm | Posted in Baseball, Rays | 2 Comments

With the Rays beating Baltimore 4-2 today, and Boston losing, the Rays’ magic number is down to 4!  Just 4 more Rays wins or Boston losses and the Rays will be champions of the American League East!  Considering that all of the remaining games on the Rays’ schedule are against Baltimore and Detroit, I don’t see them faltering.  The Red Sox finish against Cleveland (which quietly has a 7-game winning streak) and the Yankees.  You just know that the Yankees would love to do their part to keep Boston from winning the division!

While the Rays have already clinched a playoff spot, the division title is important for a few reasons.  First, it gives them home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs and a chance to play the White Sox instead of the Angels.  Sorry to Steve from the White Sox Cards blog, but I’d much rather play Chicago.  Second, it would give the Rays home field advantage in a potential ALCS matchup against the Red Sox.  The Rays are 8-1 at home against Boston this year, but only 2-7 at Fenway Park.  And finally, it would be totally awesome to see the 2008 American League East championship flag flying hanging at The Trop for years to come!

Who would have thought that the team that finished with the worst record in all of baseball last year would be this close to beating the mighty and wealthy Red Sox and Yankees for the division title…

  1. We have a newfound appreciation for the Rays since, with their relatively puny payroll, they whomped the horrible Bronx Bombas. You GO, Rays. Ok, up to a point.

  2. Thanks Patricia, but up to what point?
